Windows Update Error 80070490 fix exists. Learn how to deal with the Windows Update Error with our free and easy-to-use guide.

Recently many users have been reporting the occurrence of various errors concerning Windows Update. These errors prevent people from having their computer properly updated and may cause further problems especially if an update gets installed only halfway through. Therefore, it is essential to find a way to deal with those errors. In this particular article we’ll be dealing with the Windows Update Error 80070490. It usually occurs when there’s some problem with CBS Manifest files – the files responsible for the installation of updates. As with many other similar errors, corruption of certain system files is one of the main reasons for Windows Update errors (though the cause can always be different and require a different fix).

In this article we will guide you through three possible fixes to this problem. Before we proceed, make sure that you have your Windows installation disk nearby, because we are going to need that. These guides are applicable for all versions of Windows.

The Windows Update Error 80070490 Fix

Using SURP

First thing you may want to do is to try fixing the update error via SURP (System Update Readiness Tool). You can download the toolfrom Microsoft’s website. Make sure that you download the appropriate SURP version that corresponds to your system. Install the tool and now try to update your machine.

In quite a few cases installing SURP should be able to help you deal with Windows Update errors. It might solve your problem with the current issue as well. However, if the 80070490 persist, then you will need to try another fix. Before you proceed with our other two possible solutions, you may want to create a restore point in just in case any problem occurs and you need to reset your previous settings. To do that, right-click on My Computer icon and select properties.

1-6

From the resulting window choose System Protection (in the right panel). Go to System Properties section and click on Create. Type a name for the restore point and select Create.

2-7

Now you can always go back to that restore point if you ever feel the need to. It’s basically a good idea to have it such a point even if you don’t currently have a rpoblem with your system.

SFC scan

This will help you repair any corrupt system files that may be responsible for the update failure. In fact, SFC Scan is a very commonly used method for dealing with update-concerning issues, so it may help you with other similar Windows Update errors as well. In order to carry out this fix, you will need to open your Command Prompt

This is done by clicking on the Start Menu and typing in the search field cmd. After you do that, right-click on the first search result and select Run as Administrator.

2-7

In the resulting window type SFC/scannow and hit Enter. The following process will probably take several minutes – have patience.

2-7

Once the Command Prompt has finished scanning your PC, you will see a message. There are three possibilities as for what the message may read.

The first one is: Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations. This means that the problem does not come from any corrupt files. In this case you may try our next fix method. However, if you see this message, the reason for the error may have nothing to do with your system. It’s possible that the update itself has bugs or is broken.

3-2

The second possible message would be: Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them. This is probably the best case scenario, since it means that the scanning has found and repaired the damaged files and the error should no longer be bothering you.

The third possibility is that the message reads: Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files, but could not repair them. If you see this displayed on your screen, then type in another command in the Command Prompt: Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image/ RestoreHealth. Hit enter – you may need to wait a little.

Afterwards see if the problem is fixed and if the error still persists, try out our third fix suggestion.

System Repair

Here’s how to do the System repair:

Shut-down all programs and applications and restart your computer. Then, enter your Windows installation disk inside your DVD drive. If the Windows installation setup does not open automatically, go to My Computer and double-click on your DVD drive. Once you open the setup window, select Install now and then click on Go online to get the latest updates for installation (recommended).

3-2

Wait utill your computer searches for new updates. Once the process is over, check I accept the license terms and select Next.

3-5

You will be asked which type of installation you want. Click on Upgrade

4-4

Another process will begin, during which your PC will restart twice and you will need to go through several installation steps. You will be able to customize the settings of the installation. Just follow the prompts and you should be okay. If you are not sure about something, simply opt for the recommended settings and you should have no problem finishing the upgrading process. Once everything is done you can try to install the windows updates again. This time the error 80070490 shouldn’t occur.
