In this article we will discuss resizing system partitions and below is a guide to show you exactly how to do that. This guide will work for all versions of Windows.

Your hard disk is divided into several sections that are treated as individual units and in the world of computing they are referred to as partitions. This is done to improve the efficiency of the respective drive, as the operating system can write and manage information on each of these separate partitions, as though each of them were their own hard drive. However, this does affect the total free space on the drive, which leads us to the subject of this article. Each partition has a given size and when that size proves to be insufficient at a given point in time, you can either try to work your way around that by sacrificing other data and deleting it, or you can try and increase the size of the given partition. You can also shrink them, if you so choose.

Windows has a handy built-in tool for that purpose, which is called a partition manager. Only there is one significant drawback to using it: it will effectively wipe out anything stored on the particular partition you wish to resize. But we have a better fix for this problem that will help you manipulate the size of the partitions without deleting any of the information stored on them. So, with that issue solved, let’s head directly to our fix guide.

  3. Right-click the partition of your choice and select Resize Partition.
  4. In the resulting dialog box, set the new partition size. In essence, this is taking free space from another partition and merging it with the one you, the size of which you wish to increase. Be sure to select “Merge to (desired partition)” from the dropdown menu. Then click Start.
  5. A box will appear, asking if you would like to resize the partition by executing such and such operations immediately. Click Yes.
  6. Wait for the process to finish and when prompted to, click Complete.

Once the process is over, the screen will display the current size of the system partitions. The above actions will not result in data loss and you will be free to use your system as you please.
