Surface Book (Pro) Camera Not Working Fix

This guide is created to help you fix your camera in Surface Book and Surface Book Pro. The camera most commonly breaks after applying various system updates.

You are probably a proud owner of a brand new Surface Book or perhaps a Surface Pro device and now you are excited to test all of its amazing functionalities. Whether you plan to use it for fun at home or you rely on it to be your right hand in the office, one such machine can really provide you with great features and unlimited possibilities for work, communications, creativity and much more. One of its greatest and very handy tools is its front-facing camera, which can be used for various purposes. It recognizes your face and iris, this way allowing you to sign in to Windows 10 without the need to touch the screen or the keyboard and also gives you the functionality of video chat via Skype or other quick messaging apps.

Working with the Surface devises has never been so easy and beautiful, however, some users are reporting problems with their camera, which is not working. The reasons for that could be various, but sometimes this may be just a driver problem that could easily be fixed with a little bit of juggling in the panel. In the guide below we will give you a few easy solutions that may help you have your camera not working issue solved.

Surface Book (Pro) Camera Not Working Fix

The Guide

  • First, open the Windows Device manager by right clicking the Start button and navigating to the Device manager button.351_fixes_and_guides_image2
  • Next, scroll down to the following path: Imaging Devices > Microsoft LifeCam Front/Rear. Select the camera that is not working – you will be given the options to select the one, the other or both of them.
  • Then, you should choose the option that states “Update driver”. This option will search your device and the web for pending driver updates and it will install them.
  • In case that no driver update has been detected as pending, right click on the driver again and select “Uninstall device”. It is important to make sure that the box that states “delete this driver from device” is NOT checked!
  • At the end, restart your device. This fix should enable the Surface device to reinstall the drivers properly by itself and solve the camera issues by restoring its function.

In case that this fix does not solve the problem, try troubleshooting the camera issue in the Microsoft community or the Windows forums, where a solution may be available. Before the production release, the Windows insiders have repeatedly reported some problems with their camera, even on older machines, mostly related to software updates. The Surface Book itself has been reported to have some camera issues after a cumulative update. So, if your camera is not working, it could still be a software bug.

However, if you can’t find the reason for your camera not working and you are sure that it is not related to some software problems, then it may be some hardware failure. Surface Pro and Surface Book are relatively new devices and, even though it would be very odd for these high-end PC’s to have a hardware failure, it is not excluded that such issue may appear. If this is the reason, it would be best to contact the Microsoft Store and ask for assistance.

Visual Studio 15 Release Date – (what we know so far)

Visual Studio 15 Release Date – (what we know so far)

A number of improvements have been released in Visual Studio “15” after the announcement of the Visual Studio “15” Preview 5 earlier in October. Can this indicate that the final release may be coming soon? There are many speculations among the users of the integrated development environment, which are looking forward to the newest functionalities, but unfortunately, there is still no official information about when we should expect Visual Studio 15 final release to be available for a mass usage. However, there are several great performance boosting features that have been announced by Microsoft just a few days ago, therefore we assume that the final release date may also be approaching.

Using various Microsoft software development platforms, Visual Studio “15” has been focused on making their developer tools easier to install, providing better performance, and enhancing the developers’ productivity. Staying true to that focus, a few days ago, the Visual Studio team revealed in their blog post what new improvements and changes they have been cooking up for their extension authors and the customers who are using extensions. This is a quick glimpse of the most interesting changes:

  • A performance monitoring system for extensions has been added. It notifies the customers with a gold notification bar when an extension is slowing load time or typing speed; The monitoring system is focused on addressing three specific performance bottlenecks – Visual Studio startup performance, solution load performance, and overall responsiveness.
  • Batched Extension Installations – another long requested feature, which make it easier to install, update and remove multiple Visual Studio extensions at once.
  • The new Visual Studio installer now makes the Visual Studio more modular, by installing just the features you need for the work you’re doing. This small in size configuration saves time and gets installed in a few minutes, at the same time giving the developers the functionality they need, without unnecessary components and supporting features.
  • There are some performance improvements, related to the extension authors as well. The changes to the standard VSIX extension format now enable the authors to add some powerful new capabilities such as lightweight solution load , which is still an “experimental” feature, and NGEN support for extensions.
  • One of the last significant changes is the transition to the Visual Studio Marketplace as a place for discovering and installing extensions. It provides support to developer tools like the Visual Studio itself, Visual Studio Code and Visual Studio Team Services and makes it easier to find the desired ones in no time.350_news_dowser_image1

Microsoft: Windows 10 Anniversary Update protects you from Ransomware

Microsoft claims that Windows 10 version 1607 is the most secure Windows version to the present. This statement was announced with the release of a new security white paper called Ransomware Protection in Windows 10 Anniversary Update. A Microsoft representative reveals, that “Every day cybercriminals test new ways to attack and gain control of your PC”, therefore the company is working hard to ensure the safety of the Windows 10 users with the best security measures.

Security improvements from a new generation are included in the Windows 10 Anniversary Update, which claims to provide protection even for notorious threats such as Ransomware, that is troubling many users worldwide. Just in the past 12 months, the number of the Ransomware versions and the infections has doubled, security experts alarm. To combat this tendency, Microsoft has developed and incorporated multiple solutions into its systems and technologies in order to help the users protect their machines. In its Windows 10 Anniversary Update, the specialists have enhanced some security features, which make this version of the Windows OS the most secure and more ransomware-resilient one to the present.

In the published “Ransomware Protection in Windows 10 Anniversary Update” post, the company reveals details about how the latest Windows 10 version helps to protect all of its users – from consumers to businesses. In their blog, Microsoft prompts to Windows 10 version 1607 to the most secure version at the moment.

Here are some of the security improvements that this release includes:

Windows Defender Advanced Threat Protection. This is a new security service which is designed to help businesses respond to malicious attacks, identify damages, if any, and predict where the malware may be moving next. The Windows Defender can also work with Office 365 Advanced Threat Protection in order to provide more details about the source of the attack.

For Ransomware prevention and protection, the Microsoft team advises the users to install the Windows 10 Anniversary update and accept its default security settings. Also, for optimal protection, it is best to update all devices to the very latest updates and security patches. Creating a reliable backup strategy and regularly following it may save the users from a massive data loss, in case that a Ransomware threat encrypts the machine, advise the experts.

Browser security improvements. The Microsoft Edge browser runs Adobe Flash Player in an isolated container in the latest version. This way Edge exploits cannot execute other applications. According to Microsoft, these improvements can block malware from silently downloading and executing malicious payloads on the systems.

Windows Defender improvements.  The faster work of the Windows Defender signature delivery channel helps the in-box anti-virus and anti malware solution to block Ransomware, both in the cloud and on the client. In addition, it responds to new threats quicker than before, plus it is packed with improved behavioral heuristics, which aim to detect ransomware-related activities.

Windows 10: Disable Notifications and Block Pop-ups in Edge (Guide)

This guide will help you turn off notifications in Windows 10. Also included: block pop-ups and notifications in Edge browser.

Along with its great features, Windows 10 comes also with many types of advertisements. From short notifications to popping messages with “tips, tricks, and suggestions”; sometimes it can be annoying to deal with them, or you may simply not want them to appear and distract you from your work when you least need them. In case that you find this activity disturbing, in this guide you will find a few fixes that may help you turn off notifications in Windows 10.

Windows 10: Disable Notifications and Block Pop-ups in Edge

The Guide

How to turn off notifications in Windows 10

One of the rather annoying notifications that keep showing up now and then are the aggressively popping task bar and action center ads for the newest browser of Microsoft – Edge. In order to stop Microsoft Edge’s notifications, you should know that they are not generated by the Edge app itself, but they get displayed by the Windows operating system instead. That’s why, if you just disable the notifications for Edge, the annoying pop-ups won’t be stopped. To eliminate them, you will need to juggle the panel with your “Settings” app. For that, open the Start menu and click on the “Settings” icon to open it.

Next, you will go to “System” and find the “Notifications & Actions” option in the “Settings” app.
If you don’t want to receive notifications, generated by Windows, then you will need to scroll down to the Notifications section and just disable the “Get tips, tricks, and suggestions as you use Windows” option as shown in the picture below.
Once you do this, Windows 10 notifications will be disabled.

How to Disable Notifications in Edge?

You may see normal website notifications on your Edge browser if you have given permission to a certain website to show its notifications via Edge. However, Microsoft’s Edge promotions which may pop up from time to time are quite different from these. If you want to get rid of the website notifications, there is an easy way to disable them – Microsoft recently added support for these notifications in the Windows 10 Anniversary Update.
To control them in Edge, you will need to open Edge’s menu, navigate to Settings and select the “View Advanced Settings” option. Next, click the “Manage” button under Notifications to review and customize the websites that have permission to show you notifications.

How to block pop-ups in Edge?

If you really want to prevent different pop-ups from showing on your screen, the Edge pop-up blocker may help you keep your Edge browser clean from undesired notifications.
Pop-up windows generated by different websites in your browser can sometimes be annoying. Luckily, you can save yourself from them, because Microsoft Edge provides pop-up blocker feature, which can turn popping windows ON or OFF. Here is how can you do that:

1. First, open your Microsoft Edge browser and click on “More actions” – this option can be found on the right side of the address bar and looks like three dots as shown in the picture.
2. Next, once you open the “More actions” menu, Click on “Settings” at the bottom of the list to open the Settings screen.
3. Once there, click on “View advanced settings” right under “Advanced settings”
4. In “Advanced settings”, locate “Block pop-ups” and the switch marked as “turn ON” below it. Simply turn it ON to block the pop-ups. If you want to unblock them, just turn the same button OFF.
That’s it! We hope you found the suggested fixes useful and will share them with friends.

How to Turn Off Xbox Club notifications (Xbox One and Windows 10)

This guide will teach you how to tone down the notifications coming from Xbox Club. We’ve provided instructions for both Xbox One and Windows 10.

How to Turn Off Xbox Club notifications (Xbox One and Windows 10)

Clubs are giving amazing functionality to the Xbox users – they are designed to be created by anyone, and can give a whole new perspective to the gaming world. Now available in Xbox One, any user can create unique names for their groups, just like the Gamertag is unique. As an effective version of the Microsoft’s Clans, the Clubs make creating events and parties, sharing game clips, tips and tricks as well as chatting way easier for large groups of friends or even people interested in the same game. As of now, the Clubs functionality is available to the Xbox One initially, but it will soon be available for Xbox apps, Windows 10, Android and iOS as well.

However, apart from being useful and giving the players new ways of interactive communication, the Clubs functionality comes with some quite annoying Club notifications that pop-up now and then during the play. And whether you own a Club or you are just a Club member, being part of a large community that constantly communicates and shares some activity on the new system can result in a huge amount of spam notifications. They may be informing you about events or some new conversations happening in the group, new messages, chats, and various other short information boxes. The Club notifications may be popping up on different locations on your monitor, covering all over your PC Action Center or your TV screen. This surely can be irritating, especially when you want to soak in the game and not being constantly interrupted by tons of blinking boxes on the screen.

So, if you want to get rid of the annoying messages, here is a quick guide that will help you turn them off completely or greatly reduce the amount of notifications you are getting in the Clubs:

How to Turn Off Xbox Club notifications On Xbox One

First, double-tap your controller’s Xbox button and go to “All settings” and navigate down to the cogwheel icon.

Next, to navigate to the Clubs settings, select Preferences > Notifications > Xbox > Clubs

A menu will open where you can choose your notification preferences from the following options:

  • Turning all notifications off and on.
  • Showing pop-up notifications.
  • Hiding pop-ups during videos.
  • Showing notifications in the Guide’s notification list.
  • When you’re invited to Clubs.
  • When ownership has been transferred.
  • When you’re promoted to an admin.
  • Invitation requests (as admin).
  • Reports (as admin).
  • When new members join (as admin).
  • When admins are removed (as admin).

When you are finished with setting your preferences, just close the settings panel using the A button.

How to Turn Off Xbox Club notifications On Windows 10

For the setting to take effect, make sure that you have updated your Xbox app to the latest version available in the Windows 10 Store.

  • First, launch the Xbox app.
  • Then, from the hamburger menu on the left click on the Settings tab

  • Now you can customize your Club notifications according to your preferences by placing a tic or removing it from the list shown below.
  • 346_fixes_and_guides_image3-png
By following the steps shown in the fixes above, you should greatly reduce the amount of spam messages, you are receiving as a result from being a member in a popular and active Club. And what is best, you don’t actually need to leave it to save yourself from the pop-ups. Enjoy your game and give us a “thanks” in the comments below if we helped!

Chrome launches new audio focus feature!

Chrome launches new audio focus feature!

Interested in cool new Chrome features? “Manage audio focus across tabs to improve the audio mixing” enables you to customize your audio preferences in Chrome.

You have probably ended up many times with multiple audio sources playing at the same time in your Chrome browser, and you surely know how annoying this could be, especially when you need to click on each tab to stop them. Fortunately, a new feature in Chrome Dev for desktop and Chrome OS has been launched by Google just now, which will put an end to that. It ensures that only one audio source is playing at a time and saves you from the annoyance of the multiple sources of audio playing simultaneously. From now on, thanks to this new feature, Chrome will play audio only on the active site, provided that it has one, and will stop the sounds from other open tabs, instead of playing them all in the background.

The feature is not enabled by default, that’s why users who prefer to play some low volume music and some voice audio simultaneously can still do that. However, those of you, who mind playing multiple audio sources and wish to enable the feature, can activate it from the Chrome settings, where you can easily adjust it to fit your preferences. The easiest way to do that is to launch the Chrome browser and type the following address in the address bar: chrome://flags/#enable-default-media-session

This will guide you directly to the experimental features page. Just make sure you are using the latest version of Chrome, for the “Manage audio focus across tabs to improve the audio mixing” feature to be available. To enable it, click on the menu underneath and select either “Enable” or “Enable (Flash lowers volume when interrupted by other sound, experimental)”. The first enable option blocks any other audio source, excluding the one from the active site, while the second just lowers the volume of the other source. Then, restart the browser for the settings to take effect.

Blocking the audio through the new feature in Chrome, however, may cause some slight inconvenience in the beginning and may have some issues, since it is still in a test version. For example, if you play some music in the background that you want to listen to while browsing the web, if you come across a site that plays audio, be it an auto-playing advert or a video, the music will stop and the advert will play. At its worst, you will need to go back to the music page to click play each time it stops due to another active site with an audio, that you may come across during your browsing. Google is working on improving the feature and automating that process, but if you don’t find it that useful at the moment, you can easily disable it from the menu we showed you above.

How to fix Error 0xc0000005 (Syntax Error or Access Violation)

This guide will help you fix error 0xc0000005. This is an error you can solve yourself, with the help of our instructions.

Error code 0xc0000005 is a common Windows error, which may appear due to many different reasons. In this guide we decided to offer you the best fixes for three of the cases – the “Access Violation error” message, the “application was unable to start correctly” error message and the “MS Office error”. We did our best to offer you solutions, which are tested and easy to follow, and if you repeat them correctly, you will be able to solve the issue yourself and save a few dollars from an expensive PC repair service.

Why do you get Access violation error 0xC0000005?

The 0xC0000005 Access Violation error is a Windows error, which usually appears when you try to run a program that attempts to access a location that is not assigned for its use. The moment you close the error message, the program will close as well. Another reason for getting this code may indicate that the program wants to use system memory improperly. However, there may be many more reasons for the Access violation error 0xC0000005 to occur, such as when you try to install some software, run a certain function or launch system built-in tools.

This is what the message usually states when it appears on your screen:

“An application error has occurred and an application error log is being generated. Exception: access violation (0xC0000005), Address “The application failed to initialize properly (0xC0000005). Click OK to terminate the application”.

The “Stop 0x0000008E (0xC0000005 …) ” combination on the blue screen

What may cause the Access violation error 0xC0000005?

The Windows OS is a complicated system, which is constantly performing multiple processes and tasks. To provide users with the best functionality, the system is constantly distributing memory between the running processes. However, when a particular program attempts to access memory, which is not available for its process and is distributed to another task, the Access violation error 0xC0000005 will occur and the program will quit.

Some common reasons that may cause this disturbing code to appear are related to registry issues, faulty RAM, corrupted drivers, DEP function, a virus infection, failed system security update and many more. If you are using some third party applications, (Symantec Antivirus software was known to cause  the error 0xC0000005), they may also be a reason for the “Access violation error” message to appear and you should update them or contact their developers to get rid of the error. In fact, it is difficult to tell exactly what caused it, that’s why you may need to try different solutions in order to have it solved. Below, we have listed a few, which may be of help, so take a look at them.

Error 0xc0000005 Fix

The Guide

Solution 1: Scan your system for viruses

In case that your computer is infected with some virus or other malware, the 0xC0000005 error may indicate that it is preventing some malicious programs from executing their actions. In many cases, this is one of the common reasons for the “Access violation error” to appear. That’s why we advise you to first run a full system scan to your machine with reputed antivirus software. Don’t forget to get all security updates and latest virus definition to ensure full protection and a precise scan.

Solution 2: Repair the registry

Sometimes, corrupted registry entries and poor system maintenance may cause this error to appear. If you frequently install or uninstall software over old one without properly deleting or uninstalling the remaining files, this may cause some system malfunctions, including error 0xC0000005. To fix it, you will have to check the registry entries and delete all invalid and remaining entries. However, bear in mind that messing with the registry requires some advanced computer skills and if you don’t know what you are doing, it is best to give that task to the computer experts rather than corrupt your system by yourself. Or, you can use some third-party software that is able to repair corrupted registry automatically instead of you repairing it manually. There are such programs on the Internet, and most of them can do a good job.

Solution 3: Disable DEP (Data Execution Prevention)

Data execution prevention is a set of security features, available for Windows users, which is designed to prevent code execution from non-executable memory segments. Usually, its main task is to check memory and protect the computer from viruses. However, some programs may have a conflict with the DEP if it is enabled, which may cause the 0xC0000005 error.

If DEP is the reason for your error code, we suggest you contact the developer of the program that is causing the conflict and ask them for a solution. Another option is to disable DEP for that particular program. This can easily be done if you follow the steps below:

  • First, log into the computer as an Administrator in order to have full administrative rights.
  • Next, if you are using Windows XP, click the “Start” button and select “Run“. If you are using Windows 7, just press the Windows and R keys together. A run box will open and there you need to type sysdm.cpl and click “OK”.342_fixes_and_guises_image5
  • Then, a System Properties window will open, where you will need to click on the Advanced tab and then go to Settings.
  • Next, the “Performance Options” window will open where you need to click on the “Data Execution Protection” tab. Once there, select the option “Turn on DEP for all programs and services except those I select” and click the “Add” button.
  • Now you will need to browse files from the Open applet in order to find the .exe files of the program, that  is causing the error code. Once you find it, select it and click the “Open” button.
  • Finally, click “Apply” and “OK” to make the changes take effect.

Solution 4: Remove bad RAM (Random Access Memory) memory

Many times, a bad or incompatible RAM may bring about the Access violation error. If you added a new RAM to your PC in your attempts to improve its performance, you may have started to receive the 0xC0000005. If you remove the memory and restart the computer, this may solve the issue. Before removing the RAM, however, turn off your PC and remove all cables and the battery. Or make sure that it is fully compatible with your computer model and specifications, because if it is not, various issues may appear.

Solution 5: Update Internet Explorer 6.0

Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0 may also get you this error when you attempt to access an HTML file or web page. The IE browser may stop responding when the 0xC0000005 occurs, especially when the HTML document or website the browser tries to open includes SPAN tags, which are closed incorrectly. To solve this, you will need to update Internet Explorer or use other web browsers such as Google Chrome, Firefox, etc.

The application was unable to start correctly (0xc0000005)

Why do you get “The application was unable to start correctly (0xc0000005)” error message?

Usually, this error appears when you try to run a particular program on your computer, but instead of running, it gives you the following message:

“The application was unable to start correctly (0xc0000005). Click OK to close the application.”

It indicates that the program you are trying to open cannot start. This problem usually occurs because of the DLL, which supports running the program, is not complete, not signed or invalid. In this case even rebooting the system or reinstalling the program won’t fix the error. But here we have prepared for you some fixes that may help.

Fixes for “The application was unable to start correctly (0xc0000005)” error message.

The first thing we advise you to do if you are getting this error message is to scan your system for malware or virus infections and make sure that your computer is not infected. Also, check your RAM and HDD because a problem with them may prevent some programs from working normally. If the error is still present, you can try the following steps:

  • First, press the Windows key and the R key together to open Run command.
  • Next, type “Regedit” in the search box and press OK. The will open the Registry Editor window.
  • Then, follow the path below to navigate to the entry “LoadAppInit_DLLs”:
    HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows\AppInit_Dlls342_fixes_and_guises_image3
  • Click on “LoadAppInit_DLLs” to open it and modify its value to 0 from 1. Click OK to confirm the changes.
  • Finally, restart the computer and try to run the application causing the error. It should be able to start normally without the error code.

Microsoft Office 0xc0000005

Why do you get the Microsoft Office 0xc0000005 Error code?

The 0xc0000005 Error code may appear when you try to install Microsoft Office but the installation fails to complete. The reasons for that may vary from system file corruption, some previous installation files are not removed completely, or the installation may be blocked by security software, etc. Sometimes even proxy settings or Internet connection may prevent MS Office from being installed. To solve that, try the solutions below:

Solution 1: Try to repair the corrupted files

  • First, click the Start button and select “Control Panel”. Next, click on Programs and select Programs and Features.
  • Select the Office program in the software list and click “Change“.
  • Then, choose the “Quick Repair” option and click “Repair“. If “Quick Repair” does not resolve the problem, then try the “Online Repair” option.

Solution 2: Reset Internet Explorer Security settings

  • First, click the Start button, type “inetcpl.cpl” in the search box and press Enter.
  • This will open the “Internet Properties” window, in which there is a “Security” tab. Click on it.342_fixes_and_guises_image4
  • Next, click on “Reset all zones to default level” button and click OK. This should get the error message solved.

Solution 3: Disable Proxy

  • First, you will need to open the Command Prompt. Press the Windows and R keys together and type “cmd” in the Run box and click OK.342_fixes_and_guises_image5
  • In the Command Prompt type the following command: netsh winhttp import proxy source=ie
  • Next, press Enter and if you get a message stating “Error writing proxy settings. (5) Access is denied”, this means that you should disable the Proxy settings in Internet Explorer.
  • For that, launch Internet Explorer, click the Tools button and then the Internet Options.
  • Next, click the Connections tab and select “LAN settings“. Choose “Use a proxy server for your LAN“.
  • Finally, type the address of the proxy server in the Address box and type the port number in the Port box. If your network demands separated address for different services ( HTTP, FTP, etc.), click the Advanced button to enter the required addresses. Then click OK to save the changes.

Solution 4: Register DLL Dependencies

Sometimes, during Windows update or MS Office installation, the DLL (Dynamic Link Library) may get lost or not get registered normally in the system. To register the lost DLL, open the Run box by pressing the Windows and R keys together and simply type the following command:  regsvr32 Officevalidator.dll Click Ok and you will be good to go.

Once inside, you need to first stop the MSI Installer, the Windows Update Services, and the BITS. For that, type the commands below and press Enter after each of them. Be careful when typing the commands, tough, because incorrect or spelling mistakes may make a mess with your system. Also, be patient because completing them may take some time.

net stop wuauserv
net stop cryptSvc
net stop bits
net stop msiserver

When the services are stopped, rename the Catroot2 and SoftwareDistribution folders.
This can be done directly from the elevated command prompt by typing the following commands and pressing Enter after each of them.

ren C:\Windows\System32\catroot2 Catroot2.old
ren C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.old

Next, you need to restart the services that you stopped earlier, so Windows Update can continue working. To do that, while still in the elevated command prompt, type the following commands and as usually don’t forget to press Enter after you type each of them:

net start wuauserv
net start cryptSvc
net start bits
net start msiserver

When you are done, simply close the command prompt by clicking the X box in the upper right corner.

If you have completed all the steps from above you have successfully reset the Windows Update Components and now the annoying 0x80070013 error code should be gone.

  • Important! Start command prompt as an administrator, because an “Access is denied” message will prevent you from renaming the folders and the 0x80070013 error won’t be solved. So keep in mind this and when you are finished with the fix, you can update your Windows 10 with all its latest stability and security fixes.

This guide will help you troubleshoot the DNS_PROBE_FINISHED_BAD_CONFIG error in Chrome. This error usually occurs when you cannot connect to the DNS server.

“This webpage is not available” is a common error message that most of us have seen many times. The reasons for such an error may vary, but in this guide we are going to show you a few quick fixes that may help you solve it. Usually, the “This webpage is not available” error message indicates some issues with the DNS configuration. In Chrome, it comes with a grey massage stating something like “DNS_PROBE_FINISHED_BAD_CONFIG” or “DNS_PROBE_FINISHED_NXDOMAIN”. What this message means is that the DNS (Domain Name System) is having trouble finding the Webpage you requested.

Generally, DNS is responsible for the translation of the domain name to the numerical IP addresses and in most cases, the settings of the IP and DNS addresses are automatically assigned when your device is connected to the router. However, if these DNS settings are corrupt or wrong, your browser won’t be able to access the Internet. In this case, you will receive the “DNS_PROBE_FINISHED_BAD_CONFIG” message whenever you try to visit a website. Depending on the browser you are using, it may state something like this:

  • For Google Chrome: “This webpage is not available” DNS_PROBE_FINISHED_BAD_CONFIG” or similar.
  • In Mozilla Firefox: “Server not found. Firefox can’t find the server at”
  • In Internet Explorer: “This page can’t be displayed”

In this guide we will provide you with detailed instructions on how to solve the “dns_probe_finished_bad_config” & “dns_probe_finished_nxdomain” error message in the Google Chrome browser. Below you will find five solutions, which we hope will work for you.

The Guide

Fix 1. Run a virus scan on your device

Before you continue with your attempts to troubleshoot your Chrome connection problems, it is best that you first scan your device for viruses and malware. Such harmful programs may cause issues with your Network and Internet connection abilities and detecting and removing them may be the solution you need. This is especially true if this error only occurs on some pages.

Fix 2. Restart your Router

Sometimes, the reason for your inability to load a webpage may be with your router. A simple restart often helps to renew the Internet connection and here is how you can do that:

  • First, unplug the power cord from your router and wait at least some 30 seconds.
  • Then, plug the power cord back in again and restart your device.
  • This should solve the problem and you can try to connect to the Internet with your browser.

Fix 3. Reset TCP/IP Protocol

  • For this fix, you will need to open the elevated command prompt window.
If you are using Windows 7 & Vista you need to go to:
Start > All Programs > Accessories
    • Right-click on “Command prompt” and choose to “Run as administrator”.
If you are using Windows 10, 8 & 8.1 versions:
    • Simply give the Windows start button a right-click of the mouse and select Command Prompt (Admin) as shown in the picture below.
  • As soon as the the command prompt window appears, you will need to type the following command “netsh int ip reset” and hit the Enter key on your keyboard.
  • Once done, close the command prompt and restart your computer for the changes to take effect.

Fix 4. Refresh IP Address and Reset DNS Address settings

  • Open the elevated command prompt the same way as shown in Fix 3.
  • This time, in the window that opens you will need to type these three commands by strictly following their order and pressing Enter after typing each of them.
    1. ipconfig /release
    2. ipconfig /flushdns
    3. ipconfig /renew
  • Next, close the command prompt and restart your computer for the changes to take effect.

Fix 5: Change the DNS Settings

Normally your ISP provides the default DNS server which your PC can use. If that server is experiencing problems you can try changing it to one of the free Google DNS servers, which work just as fine. We’ve provided the instructions below.

  •  For this fix, you will need to go to Control Panel > Network and Sharing Center.
  •  Next, click the “Adapter Settings” on the left.
  •  Then, double click to open the active Network Connection (for example, the “Local Area Connection”).
  •  Once there, you will need to first click the ‘Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4)‘ and after this click “Properties”.
  • After this, choose “Use the following DNS server addresses” and type the Google DNS Server addresses as shown below:
  •  Click OK to close the network properties.
  •  Finally, restart your computer for the changes to take effect.
