Growing Austin’s urban roots

Urban Roots started four years ago to connect students in Austin, Texas to their environment and food; today the project grows more than 25,000 pounds of vegetables and herbs each year. “One of the most remarkable experiences I had while filming the video was a conversation with a 16-year-old girl,” says filmmaker Axel Gerdau. “She talked openly about a period in her life when she ate only one meal a day, a school lunch. She described how hunger had impacted her entire family. And then, without missing a beat, she gave me detailed advice on how to take good care of the tomato plants in my backyard.”
